Estée Lauder began the company with only four skincare products. She was born Josephine Esther Mentzer in Queens, NY. Later, she changed her name to Estée, which was a variation on her nickname, Esty. Estée started selling her products in hair salons. In 1946, she and her husband, Joseph Lauder, launched the company. The last name of the company was her married name. Only a year later, they got their first big order from Saks Fifth Avenue. When she launched her company, she introduced the "Gift With Purchase," which other cosmetic companies would later copy. Estée picked a pale turquoise color for the jars as she believed this color represented luxury. When a new Estée Lauder store opened, she stayed for a week, teaching the sales team merchandise display and sales techniques. The company was run mainly by word of mouth. Estée's mantra was "Telephone, Telegraph, Tell a Woman."
